The need of the client for security and structure and the elementary necessity to design a financial efficient building lead to a clear and compact design. In the three storey high building the lower grades and upper grades are divided by a collective middle area. The brick facade has the colour of the dunes. The window frames are designed systematically in a vertical direction. Large glass surfaces represent the collective spaces and entrance zones. Daylight gets through by a roof window and lightens the heart of the school. The roof is covered with mossedum vegetation. The schoolyard is orientated to the south and fenced off. Thus a private space in ‘Klein Houtrust’ is created.

The facade is mainly made of brick, in the colours of the dune landscape. The outside windows are ordered regularly and vertically, with several open sections near the public spaces and the entrance area. Extra daylight is allowed to penetrate the heart of the school by means of a garret window. The roof is covered in a mixture of moss and sedum. The school yard, which enjoys direct sunlight, is enclosed: the children have their own territory in Klein Houtrust.
