Glass House, Almelo (NL)
Dirk Jan Postel
The Glass House is one of 200 detached houses in a new urban area. The design is based on a repetition of rooms on the first floor in six bays. An obligatory 3 metres is left open on either side of the parcel, stretching the plan to its maximum width. Circulation zones on each floor are diagonally linked by the central staircase. The silk-screened glass panels that cover the house to guard its privacy avoid any expression of 'open' or 'closed' apart from the entrance area. After dark, artificial light emits from the interior and is dispersed by the dotted pattern on the glass.
